Joe Robles
Joe Robles is a photographer from Pasadena, TX. He documents the areas around Pasadena and Houston to bring light to the community and vastly diverse life of the city. His work ranges from taking photos of families at Strawberry park, Lowrider shows and ballet folkloricos, to photographing his own life and the presence of his family within this region. Robles is interested in telling honest stories about the people who represent these areas that often go unrecognized.
His work has been shared in Houston, TX and currently a part of the Accelerated Art X SCOPE Art Show in Miami, FL. His first solo exhibition will take place on Dec 11th at Strawberry Park Pavilion in Pasadena, TX.
I’m still growing up here
I focus my efforts in highlighting the moments that go unseen within these communities. As a photographer, I have the power to control my own narrative and the one it can deliver on those that I photograph. That is something I take very seriously when creating my work, especially when its close to home.
Photographing within my community is important to me not only because I am photographing my every day life as I live it but I am giving those around me photographs of their every day life as well. I’ve come to appreciate photos from around my childhood neighborhood, mine and my wife’s first apartment, and family events more and more as time passes. I want to provide that feeling to those around me with the photos I take of them.
My approach does not change between family and strangers. I can be close and have that be felt in the photos. I show a mix of work from home and the streets to get this point across.
This area has shaped me not only into the person I am but the artist I am. So I’ve always photographed Houston and the area around me as it gives me the most honest work possible.
